AKC Tracking Titles

The American Kennel Club currently offers four tracking titles:

  • TD, Tracking Dog
  • TDU, Tracking Dog Urban (pending)
  • TDX, Tracking Dog Excellent
  • VST, Variable Surface Tracking
  • CT, Champion Tracker: achieved once a dog has earned all three tracking titles (TD, TDX, VST)

Each of these titles requires the successful completion of a tracking test that has specific surface, aging, cross-track, length, and turn requirements.

More Tracking!

Achieving a tracking title takes dedication and regular tracking work (play!) with your dog.  If you enjoy the Tracking for Fun! seminar and wish to continue on the path to a tracking title, you can find more information about tracking on the AKC's Tracking page.

For those interested in pursuing an AKC tracking title, Southwest Tracking Association in Houston offers seminars and classes and hosts AKC tracking tests.

TRACKING & SCENT CLASSES

Nosework for Fun!

This 6 week course introduces you to K9 Nose Work - a new scent sport with trials coming to Texas soon! The goals of this class are to: 1) increase your dog's desire to hunt and work independently from his handler, 2) encourage your dog to become comfortable searching both indoors and out, and 3) introduce your dog to searching both on and off leash. This class is open to reactive and some aggressive dogs. There are no prerequisites, and we encourage owners with shy dogs to consider taking this class before participating in other dog sports.

  • Prerequisite: None
  • Instructor: Cathy Cobb
  • $175 for 6 weeks

Nosework for Fun II

This 4 week class introduces you and your dog to birch odor. After you've completed this class, you are eligible to participate in drop-in classes.
  • Prerequisite: Nosework for Fun!
  • Instructor: Cathy Cobb
  • $115 for 4 weeks.

TRACKING & SCENT SEMINARS

Tracking for Fun! Seminar

Austin Dog Sports offers a 2 hour, one-meeting seminar that introduces you and your dog to the basics of tracking. The cost of the seminar is $50. This is an excellent opportunity to catch the tracking bug!Speed_Tracking_2

Our tracking seminar is geared toward giving your dog a new and exciting challenge in a fun environment - the outdoors! Our seminar is not designed for canines pursuing the AKC TD (Tracking Dog) title, but we hope that taking this seminar will give you the tracking bug and encourage you to pursue tracking - for fun or competition. Tracking for Fun! seminars are held in Fall, Winter and Spring.

Scent Games Seminar

Vegas_Scent_Games

Introduce your dog to a giant, interactive toy - hidden treats in a room that you help your dog to find! Once your dog understands the rules of the game, you can make the puzzle more challenging and learn to read your dog's body language as he searches for and finds the hidden toy or treat. This is a game many trainers use to start scent detection dogs in their training. Working spaces are limited to 4 dog/handler teams.

  • Instructor: Cathy Cobb, Inka Wolter, and/or Erin Reed
  • Prerequisites: None
  • 2 hour seminar, $50 per handler/dog team.

Scent Games for Rescue Dogs

This is the same seminar as above, but open only to currently fostered dogs.

  • Prerequisites: fostered dog currently available for adoption
  • Registration: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to register. There is no fee for this seminar.

****Next Available Class: Monday, 11/21 at 6:00pm at Southpaws Playschool.****

Trailing for Fun!

Teach your pup the basic game - find the person! This is great entertainment for the people-loving dog. In this 2 hour seminar you and your dog will be introduced to the game of searching for a person and following a very short, unaged trail. Trailing combines tracking and air scent and emphasizes the solution (find the NOCDS_2011_Duke_Trailing_Smallperson!) rather than the method. Combine your dog's love of people and the outdoors with his desire to use his nose. Join Trailing for Fun!

  • Prerequisites: Non-reactive to people and dogs.
  • Instructor: Cathy Cobb
  • 2 hours, $50 per handler/dog team or $15 for auditors
